Talk and Live Q+A
To do great creative work, you need the right environment and headspace, but getting that can be incredibly difficult in the era of constant notifications, meetings, and interruptions. It’s more important than ever to prioritize caring for ourselves, but what does that look like for creatives? In this talk, Nova is going to share practical, tangible, ‘start-tomorrow’ tools you can use to live healthier and do your best work.
Nova Nicole is a Leadership Development Facilitator at Shopify, where she helps creative talent across the organization set themselves up to do their best work and grow as craftspeople and leaders. Since 2009, Nova has lectured on the effective actions that leaders in the academic, public and private sector can take to integrate and promote wellbeing at work. By speaking authentically to the unpolished process of leadership, Nova makes it safe for leaders to tell-it-like-it-is and draws decision-makers in to focus on solutions and integrate self-care into the calendar as a requirement of optimal performance.

When it comes to aesthetic and taste in design, unconscious bias is something that can be really hard to manage. But are there things we can do today to help hold ourselves accountable and prevent us from doing harm to others? In this talk, Liam is going to share his story, and provide tips for folks with privilege to prevent harm to others.
Liam leads the User Experience practice at LoblawDigital.co, empowering Canada’s largest retailer to use human-centered design and research to create digital experiences that improve the lives of all Canadians. In a past life, Liam helped ship dozens of meaningful digital products with twg.io by building software for clients from Wealthsimple to RBC, Bloomberg to ABC News, Shopify to Audi. As the honorary team mediator between his children as well as his professional teams, Liam often finds himself applying design thinking and solution design inwards at Loblaw Digital to help our 600 person organization find harmony and fulfillment in their work. Heart on sleeve, always.

After the launch of the gov.uk design system, it was quickly copied the world over, showing up in government and private sector organizations around the world. But what if the replicating of this successful design system… is missing the point? In this talk, we’ll cover the story of the creation of the gov.uk design system - how it was conceived, built, and why it works so well. But we’ll also go over the real missed lesson of the whole experience - that by copying this system, we’ve failed to learn the lesson of its creation, and are holding back our ability to innovate and design better experiences for all.
Tom is co-founder of Public Digital, a digital transformation consultancy which helps large organisations adapt to the internet era. Previously, Tom founded the Government Digital Service, winning the UK's most prestigious design award for GOV.UK, the UK's single government website and transforming the UK Government into a global leader in digital service design. Before that he was a senior leader at the BBC, helping launch its first websites, and way back in the mid-90s he was an editor on Wired magazine. He's looking forward to sharing his scar tissue with regard to how you bring design into the heart of large institutions. He may also rant a bit about how design systems go wrong.
Ben is a designer and CEO at Public Digital which helps governments and large organisations around the world adapt to the internet era. In 2020, as Deputy President, he declined the D&AD Presidency to make way for a more diverse appointment. He remains a Trustee. He was elected a Royal Designer for Industry, the first ever for Service Design, in 2018. He was inducted into the Design Week Hall of Fame in 2017. Ben holds a series of non-exec roles; a Governor of University of the Arts London, Trustee of D&AD, a member of the HS2 Design Panel and an advisor to the London Design Festival. He has won various industry awards including the Design Museum's Design of the Year and a D&AD Black Pencil.

As BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), we’ve been indoctrinated into a society that views us as passive recipients of design solutions largely led by cis-white men. Things are designed around us, and at best for us, as opposed to with us. And many of these initiatives have caused life altering and/or life threatening consequences. In this talk, conference attendees will be brought into the world of equitable design through riveting case stories and design practices by highlighting the work of BIPOC technologists, creatives, artists who are creating equitable platforms, products, services and content.
Jahan Mantin is the co-founder of Project Inkblot, a BIPOC owned and operated company that provides transformational design education through Inkblot Design™. Jahan began her career in advertising and marketing at Time Out New York magazine before joining Beyond Race magazine as the Associate Editor. Jahan earned a B.A. in Communications and Culture from Clark University and is the recipient of the Kate Spade and Company Fellowship at the New Museum Incubator, NEW INC. An avid traveler, Jahan has lived in far-reaching locales from Colombia to Scotland. She is a proud native New Yorker and currently resides in Brooklyn.
Boyuan is a hybrid thinker, creator and builder, and the co-founder and principal of Project Inkblot. She’s traversed many worlds through “work”, meandering through unexpected crevices and subcultures, such as once working in a floral wholesale warehouse servicing primarily funeral homes and churches, to coaching young people in juvenile detention centers throughout NYC, to being the owner and Editor-in-Chief of a global jazz publication partnering with legendary people and institutions like the Miles Davis Estate. Prior to Project Inkblot, Boyuan has also worked as a digital marketer, a community organizer, curriculum designer, music and culture journalist, workshop facilitator, amongst various other “titles”. Boyuan approaches the world of design through the lens of cultural anthropology, even when she’s designing jewelry, knitting hats, or frolicking in the deep bear and fox populated woods of Western Massachusetts, where she now resides.

Historically, there’s been a big disconnect between companies and top-level talent from underrepresented communities. As designers and design leaders at these companies, we need to be using our access, exposure, and privilege to help train, mentor, and support our communities and the next generation of designers. In this talk, Fonz Morris is going to explore how to do just that.

Since founding Wethos, Renock has raised over $12M in VC funding and has been featured in Forbes, TechCrunch, Business Insider and the New York Times. First of all, we want to make it very clear that everyone is welcome and encouraged to apply to speak at DesignConf 2022. No previous public speaking experience? No problem. Have a few talks under your belt or been around the block a few times? We love that too.
Your speaking background doesn’t matter to us. What does matter are your ideas. For DesignConf, we’re not looking for the conventional “10 Ways to Engage Your Stakeholders” talk or an “Overview of Design Tools”, we’re looking for timely, insightful pieces that are relevant to a broad range of designers.
When choosing a topic for your proposal, look inwards and think about what you are uniquely positioned to speak about based on your professional and personal experiences. The best talks are always the ones that only you could give.
Applications close on Monday March 7 at 11:59pm PST. All applicants will hear back from a member of our team by Friday March 11. Thank you to all those that apply!
Purchasing four or more in-person tickets? Reach out to our team at hello@joinlearners.com for a 15% discount code.
